Hi all! It’s been another busy month here at Alkemio. Since we began this journey, we have been exploring the fast developing theme of technology that puts the interests of people and society first. It sounds nice, doesn't it! And maybe worth taking a few minutes to dive in?
We think so! That is why we’ve been highlighting the growing movement worldwide, and delving into the role of ownership and governance in technology. Read below for our blog posts, with more to come in November.
Are you involved in, or curious about, public interest tech?
Alkemio is playing a part in the movement by raising awareness, and more importantly by also providing an example of how it can be done! We’d love to connect with more people around this topic. Reach out to the team!
This already has many ramifications. Should we let it control more and more of society? As technology increasingly moves into health, education, and other key aspects of our lives, the stakes are high.
Public Interest Technology says no. There is a fast-growing movement of people taking action to create tech that puts the interests of people and society first, not corporations.
In our blog post we have brought together some themes people are focusing on. We highlight key players and initiatives worldwide, especially in the Netherlands, Europe and the US. It is a fascinating and fast-moving topic, with the potential for massive impact!
Private sector speed or public sector purpose? We don’t have to choose.
People are rethinking how technology is owned and governed. Historically, there have only been 2 options on the table: • The public sector, which struggles with scale and speed • The private sector, which prioritizes profits over the interests of people and society
But new models are emerging. Mozilla, Anthropic and also Alkemio are proving we can prioritize the interests of people and society while using the speed and skills of the private sector. Steward-ownership and Public Benefit Corporations create frameworks to serve society, not just shareholders.
